Old iron-mining town in the Styrian mountains, Eisenerz is shaped by centuries of ore extraction from the Erzberg — a mountain worked since at least the 12th century and still the site of the annual Erzberg Rodeo motocross event. A medieval fortified church, founded by Rudolf of Habsburg in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th, anchors the pocket-sized centre. Nearby Leopoldstein Lake, ringed by high peaks, offers a scenic escape, and the independent heavy metal record label Napalm Records was founded here in 1992.
