Dresden
Chatham-Kent · Canada
Dresden, a small community on the Sydenham River in southwestern Ontario, is best known as the home of Josiah Henson — the African-Canadian abolitionist and minister whose life inspired the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. The Henson homestead survives as a historic site near town. Dresden also holds a significant place in Canadian civil rights history: a campaign here between 1948 and 1956 led directly to Ontario's Fair Employment Practices Act and Fair Accommodation Practices Act, legislation that shaped human rights law across the country.
