Compact old town north of Leipzig, Delitzsch preserves its medieval street plan along with a baroque castle, patrician houses, city towers, and stretches of original fortifications — evidence of prosperity that dates to the late Middle Ages, when the town served as a residence of the Duchy of Saxony-Merseburg. Cafés and restaurants are concentrated in the centre, and the surrounding area offers water, hiking, and cycling routes through nature reserves.
