Sitting on the left bank of the Río Daule in Ecuador's coastal lowlands, this city is known as the "rice capital of Ecuador" for its dominant role in the country's rice production. Part of the greater Guayaquil metropolitan area, Daule has roots in the 16th century and grew rapidly in the early 20th century as rice agriculture expanded alongside its proximity to Ecuador's main port.
