The quarter of Fátima where the 1917 apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children were reported, Cova da Iria is today a dense concentration of convents, pilgrimage hostels, hotels, cafés, and restaurants, making it the main hub for visitors to one of the most significant Marian shrines in the world. The nearby sites of Aljustrel and Valinhos are also associated with the visions.
