Correggio, in Emilia-Romagna's wine country, gave its name to the Renaissance painter Antonio Allegri, known simply as "il Correggio," and was ruled from 1518 to 1550 by the poet-politician Veronica Gambara. The town's walkable centre holds the Basilica of San Quirino and a concentration of cafés and historic churches. It is also the birthplace of composer Claudio Merulo, educator Loris Malaguzzi — who developed the Reggio Emilia approach — and rock singer Luciano Ligabue.
