Clonmel
Ireland
County Tipperary's largest town sits on the River Suir, with the Slievenamon hills and the Comeragh Mountains rising nearby. Clonmel's walkable centre has a good spread of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, and the town carries a notable place in Irish history for its resistance to Cromwell's forces in 1650 — one of the few towns to hold out before eventually surrendering. The name in Irish, Cluain Meala, means "honey meadow," a reference to the fertile farmland of the surrounding area.
