Clifden

A small harbour town on the northwest coast of County Galway, Clifden sits where the Owenglin River meets Clifden Bay, with mountain terrain rising behind it. The largest town in the Connemara region, it developed as a market and harbour settlement before becoming a Victorian coastal resort after the Famine, and its Victorian architecture still defines the centre. A good spread of cafés and restaurants for a town this size makes it a practical base for exploring Connemara.
