Chang'an, Tang Empire
Shaanxi Province · China
The imperial capital of the Sui and Tang dynasties, Chang'an was at its height one of the largest cities in the world — a cosmopolitan metropolis that drew diplomats, students, monks, merchants, and settlers from across Central Asia, Persia, Japan, Korea, and beyond. Its ruins, designated a national heritage site in 1996, lie across a wide area of what is now Xi'an in Shaanxi Province, ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
