Castlebar
Ireland
The county town of County Mayo in western Ireland, Castlebar has a café and restaurant scene that punches above its weight for a modest town. A river runs through the centre, and the surrounding countryside — including nearby mountains — holds most of the area's points of interest, so a car is useful. The Country Life section of the National Museum is based here, and the town traces its origins to a 13th-century castle of the de Barry family.
