This town in the Salento area of Apulia, Lecce province, with a compact centre holding a concentration of historic churches — among them the Church of Santa Maria della Croce, considered one of the oldest Christian sites in the world. The surrounding countryside is planted with olive groves, the basis of a local agricultural economy, and vineyards extend into the wider area.
