Campo de Criptana's hilltop windmills — three of which date to the 16th century — are among the best-preserved examples of the mills that Don Quixote famously battles in Chapter VIII of Cervantes's novel, making this La Mancha town one of the most recognisable stops in the region. The town is also the birthplace of actress and singer Sara Montiel (1928–2013) and conductor Luis Cobos (born 1948), and sits in deep wine country with a compact centre of cafés and restaurants.
