A wine-country town on the La Mancha plain in Ciudad Real, Alcázar de San Juan has a walkable centre with a good spread of cafés and restaurants. Its history from the 13th to the 19th century was shaped by the Grand Priory of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and it later became a significant railway hub. Vineyards surround the town on the open Castilian plain.
