Caldas da Rainha

Oeste · Portugal

Founded in the 15th century by Queen Leonor around therapeutic sulphurous hot springs, Caldas da Rainha is a Portuguese town in the Oeste region whose name translates roughly as "Queen's Hot Springs." The thermal hospital she established here is the oldest purpose-built institution of its kind in the world. The town is also known for its ceramic pottery tradition, a walkable centre with a dense food-and-drink scene, and vineyards in the surrounding area. Caldas da Rainha holds UNESCO Creative City status.
