Bukovo, a village just outside Bitola in North Macedonia's Pelagonija region, is credited with inventing crushed red pepper flakes, and the tradition of Lazarus Saturday — largely abandoned elsewhere in the country — is still observed here. The nearby archaeological site of Herakleia Lynkestis, founded by Philip II of Macedon, lies close to the village, and scenes from the series Shadows over the Balkans were filmed here.
