Founded as Heraclea Lyncestis in the 4th century BC by Philip II of Macedon, Bitola is one of North Macedonia's oldest cities and its second largest, known since the Ottoman period as the "City of Consuls" for the many European consulates it once hosted. The walkable centre, set along the Dragor River at the foot of Baba Mountain and Pelister National Park, retains a strong café culture alongside historic churches, and the city sits close to the border with Greece.
