Binche
Belgium
Binche's annual February carnival — a three-day event in which costumed Gilles parade through the streets, throw oranges to crowds on the Grand Place, and march to music and fireworks — has been recognised by UNESCO as part of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage. The town's 14th-century ramparts are the best-preserved in Belgium, and its Belfry and City Hall are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The walkable centre in this Hainaut town carries a real café and restaurant scene.
