At the confluence of the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers — where they merge to form the Lielupe — Bauska is a modest town in southern Latvia's Zemgale region, a short drive from Riga. The town centre is a protected urban heritage monument, and the Via Baltica international highway passes through. The surrounding area is predominantly agricultural, with stretches of forest.
