France Meuse

Bar-le-Duc

Meuse · France

First recorded in 1344, the currant preserve known as Bar-le-Duc jelly — sometimes called "Bar caviar" — takes its name from this Renaissance town in northeastern France's Meuse département, where it is still produced. The lower town runs along the Ornain river, with cafés and restaurants in a walkable centre, while the upper quarter, the Ville Haute, holds a concentration of listed Renaissance buildings. The town also served as the starting point of the Voie Sacrée, the supply route that kept Verdun provisioned during the 1916 battle.
