Bagnacavallo, a small wine-country town in Emilia-Romagna, gave its nickname to the Renaissance painter Bartolomeo Ramenghi. Its medieval centre holds several historic churches, including the Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo and the ancient Pieve di San Pietro in Sylvis with its medieval frescoes, along with the Palazzo Vecchio, the Torre Civica, and the elliptical porticoed Piazza Nuova — an uncommon form for a town square. Cafés and restaurants fill the central core, and vineyards lie nearby in the surrounding plain between the Lamone and Senio rivers.
