Arenal

Costa Rica

Nuevo Arenal sits on the north shore of Lake Arenal, an artificial reservoir created in 1979 when the original village of Arenal was submerged — the town itself was built as a government resettlement project for displaced residents. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have held Ramsar designation since 2000. The area offers lakeside accommodation, including several bed and breakfasts, and a little town centre with German, Costa Rican, and Italian restaurants and basic amenities.
