Aigues-Mortes
Gard · France
Enclosed within well-preserved medieval walls, this pocket-sized town in the Camargue region of southern France sits at the junction of two waterways and draws canal traffic from across the region. The walled centre is dense with cafés and restaurants, the surrounding Camargue landscape offers salt production at the Salins d'Aigues-Mortes, and the area carries three Natura 2000 designations. The town also holds arenas used for Camargue-style bullfighting, and a 1893 massacre of Italian workers remains part of its recorded history.
