A heritage-dense Hanseatic town on the eastern bank of the IJssel river in Gelderland, Zutphen has a walkable centre packed with listed historic buildings, medieval churches, and a strong food-and-drink scene. First mentioned in the 11th century, it received city rights in 1190 and joined the Hanseatic League, growing into a prosperous trading centre by the 14th century. The town sits at the confluence of the IJssel and the Berkel, giving it water views on multiple sides.
