Latvia's easternmost town, Zilupe sits just a few kilometres from the Russian border on the Zilupe River, at the end of one of the country's longest passenger rail routes from Riga. The town grew from a railway settlement established around 1900 and gained town rights in 1931. The European route E22 crosses the border here, making Zilupe a transit point between Latvia and Russia.
