A coastal city at the mouth of the Limpopo River in southern Mozambique, Xai-Xai draws visitors to its wide sandy beaches and coral reefs suitable for snorkelling. The capital of Gaza Province, it was founded in 1897 under the name Chai-Chai and carried several colonial names before independence restored the original, spelled Xai-Xai.
