Small Finnish town in Pirkanmaa set beside Lake Toisvesi, Virrat sits in a largely rural landscape of lakes and low terrain north of Tampere. The municipality was separated from Ruovesi parish in 1868 and gained town status in 1977. Its 18th-century church, built between 1772 and 1774 under builder Antti Hakola, remains a local landmark. A crater on Mars bears the town's name.
