The January 1951 Battle of Vinh Yen — the first direct confrontation between General Võ Nguyên Giáp and French commander Jean de Lattre de Tassigny — gives this Red River Delta city in northern Vietnam a specific place in the history of the First Indochina War. Set within sight of mountains and close to water, Vinh Yen also served as the provincial capital of Vĩnh Phúc and hosted the 2012 Asian Men's Cup Volleyball Championship.
