Villedieu-les-Poêles
Manche · France
Copper-working has defined this compact Normandy town for centuries: the second half of its name, "les Poêles," was added in 1962 to reflect its long tradition of copper pan manufacture and metalwork, and the town is home to one of only five bell foundries in France — which supplied bells to Notre-Dame de Paris in 2013. The locals' nickname, Sourdins (meaning "the deaf ones"), recalls the generations of coppersmiths deafened by repeated hammering.
