Veles
North Macedonia
Town on the Vardar river in central North Macedonia, Veles has a compact centre with a concentration of cafés and restaurants and mountain terrain rising around it. The city has a long history — settled since at least 168 BCE and known by several names over the centuries, including Ķupurli under Ottoman rule and briefly Titov Veles in the Yugoslav era — and claims a string of Macedonian cultural firsts, among them the country's first theatre, first library, first gymnasium, and first museum.
