Varnhem

Sweden

Varnhem, a small village in Västra Götaland, is home to one of Sweden's most significant early medieval religious sites: a stone church dating to at least the 1040s, considered the oldest of its kind in Sweden outside Scania, alongside a Christian cemetery in use as far back as the late ninth century. The Cistercian order founded Varnhem Abbey here around 1150, and its abbey church remains in use today.
