This small mountain hamlet in Watauga County, North Carolina, takes its name from the Latin for "Vale of the Cross," a reference to the valley where three streams converge in the shape of an archbishop's cross. Situated along NC 194 between Banner Elk and Boone, it sits at the meeting point of those waterways in the Blue Ridge highlands.
