Tiny Russian town on the southwestern shore of Lake Valdayskoye, in the Valdai Hills between Moscow and St. Petersburg, with a compact centre of cafés and restaurants close to the water. The lake is the largest in this elevated cluster of lakes, and the surrounding Valdai Hills give the area a distinctly hilly character unusual for the Russian northwest.
