Coastal and mountain-edged city in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Uto has served as a strategic transit point since the medieval period, when rival warlords competed for control of the area. It is historically associated with the castle town of Konishi Yukinaga and continued as a commercial and industrial centre in the modern era, gaining city status in 1958. UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
