Laid out in 1573 as a riding path from the Berlin Palace to the Tiergarten and lined with linden trees from 1647, Unter den Linden is Berlin's grand central boulevard, running from the Berlin Palace to the Brandenburg Gate. The avenue passes through the Mitte district, connecting major landmarks, rivers, and sights along its length, with cafés and restaurants lining a route that developed into a commercial and hotel strip during the imperial era.
