A trading town in Sudan's North Kordofan state, Umm Ruwaba serves as a significant hub for oilseed and hibiscus (karkadeh) grain markets, and sits at the junction of road and rail routes connecting western Sudan and South Kordofan to Khartoum and Port Sudan. Known locally as "the bride of the neem tree" for the abundance of neem trees throughout the town, it lies at moderate elevation and a short drive from water.
