A barrier island off Georgia's Atlantic coast, Tybee Island is a long-established beach getaway for Savannah residents that has grown into a broader vacation destination, with cafés and restaurants in its pocket-sized centre. The oft-photographed Tybee Island Light Station and the Fort Screven Historic District anchor its heritage, while a stranger chapter of its history lingers offshore: a Mark 15 nuclear bomb accidentally dropped by the U.S. Air Force in 1958 was never recovered from the sea.
