Once the capital of the ancient Sinhala kingdom of Ruhuna in the 3rd century, Tissamaharama is a southern Sri Lankan town that sits on the water and serves as the main gateway to Yala National Park and the pilgrimage site of Kataragama. Structures from the Ruhuna period survive in the town, and there is a solid café and restaurant scene for a place this size.
