Founded on 1 November 1535 by Captains Juan de Ampudia and Pedro de Añasco under orders from Sebastián de Belalcázar, Timbio is one of the oldest Spanish-founded municipalities in Colombia — the third oldest in the country. This small town in the Cauca Department sits a short distance south of Popayán, the departmental capital, within sight of the mountains that define the region.
