Thaton

Myanmar (Burma)

Thaton served as the capital of the Thaton Kingdom from at least the 4th century BC until the mid-11th century AD, making it one of the oldest urban centres in southern Myanmar and a place of early significance for Buddhism in the region. Set in Mon State on the Tenasserim plains, the city sits against a forested hill range to the east, with the sea a short distance to the west and mountains visible from the town.
