Taxco, a town in the Mexican state of Guerrero southwest of Mexico City, has been synonymous with silver for centuries — first as a major mining centre during the colonial era, then as a hub for silverwork and jewellery that remains its signature trade today. The 18th-century Santa Prisca Cathedral, built in the New Spanish Baroque style, anchors a compact historic centre of colonial-era buildings designated a national heritage zone in 1990, set among hills and narrow winding streets lined with silver shops.
