Bitchū Matsuyama Castle, a rare surviving mountain castle in Okayama Prefecture, overlooks this compact city in the mountains of western Japan. The historic centre was the castle town of the Bitchū Matsuyama domain, and Raikyū-ji, a Buddhist temple with a historic garden, adds to the heritage on offer. A Wikivoyage entry reflects steady independent traveller interest in the town.
