Sutri

Viterbo · Italy

Sutri's ancient remains — a Roman amphitheatre carved directly into tuff rock, an Etruscan necropolis of rock-cut tombs, and a Mithraeum embedded in the crypt of the church of the Madonna del Parto — make this little Lazio town, around 50 km north of Rome, one of the more archaeologically layered stops along the Via Cassia. A Romanesque Duomo and a café and restaurant scene strong for its size round out the offer, and the town sits on a narrow tuff hill surrounded by ravines, with vineyards in the surrounding countryside.
