Straubing
Germany
This walkable Bavarian town on the Danube with a dense concentration of historic churches and a lively food-and-drink scene in its centre, Straubing hosts the Gäubodenvolksfest each August — the second-largest fair in Bavaria. In the late Middle Ages it served as one of the capitals of the Bavarian duchy alongside Munich, Landshut, and Ingolstadt, and that history is still visible in its architecture. It also sits at the edge of the Bavarian Forest.
