Sitting on the banks of the Salaca river in Latvia's Vidzeme region, Staicele is a pocket-sized town whose history grew from a 19th-century tavern and ferryman's crossing into a paper-mill settlement with its own narrow-gauge railway by 1913. It is the birthplace of Latvian conductor Jānis Zirnis. The town lies roughly a day's drive north of Rīga along road P15.
