Capital of Lower Austria since 1986, St. Pölten sits on the River Traisen in the Alpine foothills with a walkable historic centre dense with listed buildings and churches, a lively food-and-drink scene, and vineyards in the surrounding countryside. The city is considered one of Austria's oldest, with settlement in the area dating to the Stone Age, and sits within a wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. In 2016 it was designated a Reformation City of Europe.
