A cathedral city in Hertfordshire north of London, St Albans sits on the site of the Roman city of Verulamium — one of the first major stops on Watling Street — and retains a walkable centre dense with listed historic buildings, medieval churches, and a strong café and restaurant scene. The city takes its name from St Alban, considered the first Christian martyr in Britain, executed in 308 AD.
