Sneek

Netherlands

Walkable Frisian town built around its canals, Sneek is the hub of the Frisian Lakes district and home to the Waterpoort, a 16th-century watergate that serves as the city's symbol. Its historic centre is dense with listed buildings and cafés, and each summer it hosts Sneekweek, the largest sailing event on inland European waterways. One of the traditional eleven cities of Friesland, it sits close to the Sneekermeer and draws both boating visitors and winter ice-skaters.
