Smilevo, a mountain village in North Macedonia's Demir Hisar municipality, holds a central place in Macedonian revolutionary history: the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie uprising of August 2, 1903 began here, following a congress of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) held in the village that May. Smilevo is also the birthplace of Dame Gruev, one of IMRO's founders and most prominent leaders.
