Declared a UNESCO City of Peace in 1989 by the UN Secretary-General — following years of international artists' gatherings organised by painter Karel Peče — Slovenj Gradec is a tiny town in the Mislinja Valley at the eastern end of the Karawanks range in northern Slovenia. The historic centre has a café and restaurant scene, and the town holds regional cultural institutions including an art gallery and a regional museum.
