This riverside city in eastern Croatia on the Sava — which doubles as the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina — Slavonski Brod has a walkable centre with a solid food-and-drink scene and scenic surrounds. Known in Roman times as Marsonia and recorded as Brod na Savi from 1244, it is the administrative centre of Brod-Posavina County and one of the larger cities in Slavonia.
